Windows 7: Looks Good, but This is No Time to be an Early Adopter!

By chrisgammon • October 20th, 2009

chris-139X194Microsoft’s Windows 7 is set to be released on October 22nd. It looks like a great product and our initial testing is very encouraging. Here are several links to information that may be valuable:

Most computers which are currently running Vista will be capable of being upgraded to Windows 7 – and newer ones, purchased in the last 2 months, may be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7. Vendors such as Dell and HP, will offer Microsoft Windows 7 on new machines which is sure to result in pressure to upgrade existing machines.

Please, do not just add Microsoft Windows 7 workstations to your network or convert existing workstations without some planning or testing.

There are a few key points we’d like to make you aware of :

  • It may be very difficult to upgrade computers running Windows XP. Before attempting to upgrade any computer, we strongly recommend that you contact your hardware provider or IT Administrator.
  • Most applications have not yet been certified for use with Windows 7. Although initial testing has been very good, unexpected issues could arise and impact your company’s daily work.

We recommend you don’t rush into this very promising new desktop operating system, but rather plan for its introduction to your company when your critical applications are certified by their publishers.

If you have any questions or want some assistance in planning your move to Microsoft Windows 7, please contact us.
